We’re excited to announce the first episode of our new podcast, Show & Tell from Indicator. It takes you inside digital investigations as leading journalists, OSINT investigators, threat analysts, and researchers walk through a real story, report, or case they worked on. Each episode features a recognized figure in the OSINT, digital investigations, or trust & safety community.
Show & Tell is hosted by us, Alexios Mantzarlis and Craig Silverman, and our first guest is Jeff Horwitz. Jeff is an investigative reporter for Reuters who has done some of the most impressive investigations into Meta’s products and systems.
Before joining Reuters, Jeff covered Meta for The Wall Street Journal where he broke lots of stories, including about the prevalence of child exploitation on its products and the big Facebook Files investigation that used a trove of internal documents to reveal Instagram's negative impact on teen mental health, the facilitation of human trafficking, the amplification of political violence, and more.
He continued his coverage of Meta at Reuters where he recently published a great series about how Meta has earned billions from online scam ads and at times thwarted efforts to rein them in.
That’s what we wanted to talk to him about. In particular, we wanted to hear about how he ran an experiment that saw him actually purchase and run scam ads on Meta.
We hope you enjoy and learn from the conversation. Catch every episode by subscribing to our YouTube channel. We’re also on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
