Late last month, Roelof Temmingh was putting the finishing touches on a new GitHub page of OSINT resources when it and his account suddenly disappeared from public view.
Temmingh is well known in the OSINT community as the creator of the Maltego investigation platform. He’s now building Ubikron, a web capture and research tool. Prior to being blocked, the Ubikron GitHub account had basic details about the product and company, and a page that listed useful Chrome extensions. Temmingh was working on a new repo of tools that can be used in conjunction with Ubikron to research names, emails, and crypto wallets, and other assets.
“I was putting in links and getting all the examples and the next moment it's 404,” Temmingh said, referring to the HTTP status code for an inaccessible webpage. “This basically is just a list of resources.”
Ubikron’s entire profile remains hidden from public view, though Temmingh can still login to view and edit his content. The same thing happened to a Russian cyber intelligence researcher who goes by the handle Tatyana Scully, and to an information security professional based in India, both of whom spoke to me. They all said their accounts were restricted without any warning from GitHub.
