I analyzed 38 "situation monitoring" dashboards. Here are the ones worth using (and what many get wrong)

A few weeks ago, people lined up outside a Washington, DC bar. They were waiting to be let into the “Situation Room” — a three-day pop up concept from Polymarket, the prediction market company.

The venue was supposed to be a real-time monitoring dashboard come to life, with “dozens of TVs displaying Bloomberg terminals, X feeds, and cable news,” according to Wired. The idea was that people would get some drinks and monitor markets, current events, conflicts — and maybe place a few bets.

It was a bust. When patrons were finally let inside, the screens didn't work. There were also technical issues the next day. Nobody was able to monitor the situation, as the saying goes.

It’s an entirely different dynamic online, where Indicator has identified at least dozens of free and freemium vibecoded situation monitoring dashboards vying for your attention. But there’s an issue there, too. Many of them simply provide the illusion that you’re a high-end trader or situation monitor examining the trends and info needed to make decisions.

I set out to see if any of the dashboards could be useful for journalists, researchers, and OSINT analysts. I collected and evaluated 38 dashboards. I also ran a parallel process with Claude Code to analyze and categorize the dashboards. This report combines my observations and testing with AI-assisted analysis to give a sense of what they offer and when they are and aren’t useful. I also created a chart that breaks down their features, and I highlight a few appealing open-source options that you can customize to your needs.
